Taking an eco-friendly approach is something we should all be doing, especially when it comes to the world’s oceans and other bodies of water. As dangerous as plastic waste and other forms of pollution are, as a surfer, you may be polluting the waters you surf in and not even realize it, simply by using traditional surf wax.
So what’s wrong with the traditional surf wax?
That’s a very good question to ask. Surf wax is an important accessory we wouldn’t dream of suggesting you try to hit the waves without. It provides much-needed grip and stops you from slipping and sliding when you are trying to stay upright.
However, traditional surf wax is very problematic as about 95% of what’s available today is made of toxic ingredients, including paraffin and artificial perfumes.
Paraffin is dangerous as it is a by-product from the distillation of petroleum. What makes it so bad, though? It is not water-soluble. When worked off your board, it drops into the ocean and won’t dissolve and disappear, rather it will stick around and cause serious problems for the beaches, sensitive ecosystems and reefs where you are most likely to surf.
So next time you are heading out for a surf, ask the simple question – what’s on your board?
